Kenton Lowe - Introduction

Men do ballet dance!

This is a direct response to Michelangelo Pistoletto’s ‘Venus of the Rags’. Initially I felt my sculpture should represent the ideal of classical sculpture as with the Venus used in the ‘Venus of the Rags’, thus, setting up an interesting contrast between classical sculpture and contemporary sculptural ideas. This sculpture, is a self-portrait. It confronts personal issues of my relationship with my children and my role as a domesticated house-husband. The sculpture is made from my actual children’s clothes which is an integral part of the work. I am represented as a ballerina from Degas’ sculpture of ‘a fourteen year old ballerina’ a classic symbol of traditional sculpture.
